Calculate is on the Outline menu. Calculate sums the numbers in the subheadlines of a selected headline and places the sum at the cursor position in the selected headline. If a number already exists in the selected headline, MORE replaces the number with the new sum.
When you choose Calculate, MORE displays a dialog box with the following options:
Field Format Displays a pop-up menu with the following formats:
General Accepts any mixture of numbers and dollar amounts. If there are dollar amounts, the totals and subtotals will also be in dollars.
Money Calculates only headlines with dollar amounts. It ignores all other numeric formats.
Numbers Calculates only headlines with plain numbers, with or without a decimal point.
Time Sums total time. It calculates numbers in the form of hh:mm:ss, hh:mm, or mm:ss, where “h” is hours, “m” is minutes, and “s” is seconds.
Type-in box Displays the format selected from the pop-up menu. You can also type-in a custom pattern to be calculated. For example, typing # students will calculate all subheadlines with a number followed by the word “students.”
Create Subtotals Calculates numbers at subheadlines. A subheadline containing a subtotal will always be updated. This option only affects the creation of new subtotals. Checking this box again turns off the display of subtotals. However, MORE still calculates numbers at existing subtotals to derive the total at the selected headline.
Calculate works according to the following rules:
• Figures to be calculated cannot contain more than one decimal point.
• Only the first eight decimal places are used; for amounts in dollars, only the first two decimal places are used. Any extra numbers are truncated, NOT rounded off.
• If you’ve selected the General format and one or more figures being summed is preceded by a dollar sign ( $ ), then the total will be expressed in dollars.
• For negative dollar amounts, either the minus sign (–) must precede the dollar sign, or the amount must be in parentheses.
• MORE accepts the same type-in tokens that are used with the Pattern Editor. For example, typing Project Costs $# will total only headlines that contain the text “Project Costs,” followed by a number following a dollar sign.
NOTE: If you have a string currently highlighted in a headline when you choose the Calculate command, MORE will use that current selection to determine the default format for the calculate operation. For example, if you highlight the string “$50.00,” MORE will choose the Money format as the default format for the calculate. Then, you can press Command-Option-= to bypass the Calculate dialog box, and immediately perform the calculation.
